Chinese Calligraphy Art Lesson August 17 2010

Elmo is always super stoked (and loves to dress up for) about giving one of her art lessons at the YSB...you can read it on her face!

Elmo always likes to do a "warm up" activity for us. Here we made the Chinese character for "China," or well almost because Elmo forgot two lines! We had to answer a question about China or Asia to pass the streamer to the next person and form a line.

Then Elmo gave us a Power Point lecture about the Chinese language.

We took a break after the lecture to finish up our summer art project...

Then Elmo had us make the backs of some wood pieces sooty using candles. Then we had to scratch into that soot whatever concepts/words we could remember from her lecture with a chopstick.

Then Elmo taught us to paint Chinese-styled bamboo on the other side of the wood.

Next we lit the ends of those chopsticks to make charcoal and write our names in Chinese!

Finally, we outlined our Chinese names in gold!

Final product!
